As we just mentioned, the device gets its name from its screen. The BlackBerry Bold features a half-VGA (480x320 pixel resolution), 65,000-color display, and during some initial product testing, research group participants repeatedly called the screen "bold" and "brilliant." The Brilliant moniker didn't really jive with the company, thus the BlackBerry Bold was born.

So just how bold is it? Well, RIM stopped by our office late last week to show us the device, and let me just tell you, I was absolutely blown away. I can pretty much say I've never seen a better-looking display on a smartphone. Colors pop off the screen, and it's really amazing how sharp and crisp everything looks on the display. We watched a couple of videos, and for the first time, we didn't notice any of that pixelation or blurriness that you typically get with phones. In addition, the menu interface has been revamped with a much more modern look and icons.

Also, as you can see from the images, the BlackBerry Bold boasts a new design. It's more elegant than models past, with curvier edges and a silver trim that complements the black casing. If you turn it over, you'll also notice that the back has a leatherette texture. No more slick plastic and RIM will sell replaceable backplates in different colors, including blue, gray, and red, if you want to spruce up your phone a bit. Sizewise, the BlackBerry Bold measures 4.5 inches tall by 2.6 inches wide by 0.5 inch deep and weighs 4.7 ounces. Finally, the BlackBerry Bold has a new QWERTY keyboard that RIM likened to a modernized Curve keyboard, but I'm not really seeing it. Instead it reminded me more of the BlackBerry 8830. Now, I know some of you 8800 series users had issue with the keyboard, but I tried it out and it's pretty easy to use--large-ish buttons with some spacing between the keys.

Wireless smorgasbord

There's a heaping of wireless options on the quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) BlackBerry Bold, but the most appetizing and notable item is the HSDPA/UMTS (850/1900/2100) support. It's the first such-equipped BlackBerry, and we all know it's been a long time coming. RIM says the delay for bringing such a device to the market is that it wanted to make sure battery life wouldn't be sacrificed at the expense of including the 3.5G technology. Hey, whatever the reason, we're just finally happy to have it. You also get integrated Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g), Bluetooth 2.0 with full A2DP support, and built-in GPS (enhanced and assisted).

Horsepower:

The RIM BlackBerry Bold is equipped with a 624MHz Intel PXA270 processor whereas previous BlackBerrys had 312MHz processors, so technically, you should enjoy smoother and faster performance. During our briefing, there were a few hiccups in performance, but we're going to keep our fingers crossed and chalk it up to the fact that it wasn't a final unit. There's also 128MB flash memory and 1GB of onboard memory, which is all supplemented by the microSD/SDHC expansion slot (supports up to 16GB cards).

Multimedia, Web, and other good stuff:

You still with me? I know this post is getting a bit lengthy, but just a few more highlights to note. First, the Bold includes an improved Web browser (thank goodness) with the option to view pages in a full desktop HTML style or a mobile version, and you can now more easily navigate pages with the trackball, which acts like a mouse cursor, and zoom in/out.

As for multimedia, the smartphone is equipped with a 2-megapixel camera with video-recording capabilities and up to 5X zoom. The media player also continues to support numerous audio and video formats, including MP3, WMA, AAC, DivX4, and WMV3 files, and the phone is equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack. By the way, the Bold has got some pretty powerful speakers--none of that weak, tinny junk.

Oh, and hey, what's this? It's makes calls and sends and receives e-mails you say? Yes, you'll still get all of the voice and messaging features of previous BlackBerrys, and the handset will also come preloaded with Dataviz's Documents to Go suite for document viewing and editing.

"When and where can I get one?"

Now, that we've totally built up the device and you're ready to run out and buy one, here's the letdown. The RIM BlackBerry Bold isn't available quite yet. It's currently going through carrier certification, and though RIM wouldn't officially name the service provider, based on the 3G bands, you can pretty much guess who it will be (hint: starts with an A and ends with a T&T). And while pricing will also depend on the carrier, RIM is guessing it will be in the $300 to $400 range and expected worldwide availability is "this summer."

OK, that's it! My fingers are tired from all the typing, so now it's your turn. Clearly, I'm pretty amped about the smartphone. Of course, the true test will come when we finally get it in for real-world testing, but from everything I've seen so far, the RIM BlackBerry Bold has huge potential. But what do you think? Nokia N82

The pics are the best we've ever seen from a camera phone. Nokia's N82 springs to the top of our "phones that will replace your camera" list.Rather than a successor to last year’s N95, one of Nokia’s first smart phone for 2008, the N82 is another well equipped device with many of the flagship models niceties, but with a lower price tag.

Unlike the N95 and the N81 before it, the N82 forgoes the slider-style form factor for the dated candy bar design which is light enough for the pocket, comfortable in the hand and a feels solid overall.

The front face features a camera for video calls at the top with a typical 2.4" QVGA screen in the middle, then operational and alpha-numeric keypad at the bottom. While the navigation keys are well designed, we weren’t fond of the tiny keypad buttons at all.

Located on the sides of the handset are a Micro SD slot (with complimentary 2GB card inside), Micro USB port, stereo speakers, volume control, plus camera and media hotkeys. Then at the top is a power switch and handy 3.5mm headphone socket.Running on the latest version of the Symbian operating system, there’s a full suite of software tools for both work and play including Nokia Maps which makes use of the handset’s GPS receiver, and WiFi 802.11 b/g for online activities such as downloading content wirelessly from Nokia’s new music store and N-Gage gaming service.Though undoubtedly N82’s winning feature is the 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and for the first time on any Nokia handset, a Xenon flash.The results were the best we’ve seen from a camera phone, particularly night shots thanks to the new powerful flash. The N82 is a capable jetsetter with quad-band auto-switching and HSDPA for quick data transfers where WiFi isn’t available. Call quality was clear and problem free in our metro area, and the handset paired seamlessly over Bluetooth for in-car use.While the N82’s feature-set and camera quality offer a compelling package, the form factor and keypad will come down to a matter of personal taste.If you're a keen photographer and wished your current digital camera had the latest wireless connectivity, GPS navigation, multimedia and smart phone features built-in, the N82 is highly worth considering.

LG HB620T with DVB-T

The LG HB620T is a strange looking device, with a wide aspect screen and an antenna that sticks out of the back. The reason for these odd looks is simple - the HB620T includes a DVB-T digital TV receiver.

DVB-T is what most people would regard as a "standard" terrestrial digital TV signal, used in the UK for Freeview boxes and pretty much everywhere else in Europe for over-the-air digital TV. Until recently, most of the handful of mobile phones that could receive a digital TV signal used DVB-H, a variation of the domestic DVB-T signal, but designed for mobile devices. The Nokia N77, N92 and Samsung F510 are a few examples of handsets with DVB-H built in.So why did LG choose DVB-T for the HB620T? Simply because DVB-H coverage is limited to a small number of places, and DVB-T is available pretty much everywhere. But DVB-T has two major drawbacks, one of which is that the transmitters work on different frequencies which means that a DVB-T receiver will have to rescan when it moves between transmitters, whereas DVB-H is designed to use the same frequency between all transmitters in a network. The video signal on DVB-H has also been adjusted to mean that it requires less power to decode it, so mobile DVB-T devices will tend to drain the battery quite quickly.


By their very nature, mobile phones with TV receivers in tend to look a little odd, beacause TV pictures are wide.(landscape) and most phone screens are tall (portrait) ratio devices. Some manufacturers have come up with rotating screens and handsets that lie on their side, but LG have gone for the simple approach of mounting a 2" 320 x 320 pixel panel rotated by 90 degrees. It's a simple approach, and it means that the LG HB620T can "sit up" on its keypad. One obvious downside is that a 2" display is quite small, for comparison the Nokia N77 has a 2.4" display, and the N96 comes with a 2.8" display.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1:
The XPERIA is a new brand of mobile phones from Sony Ericsson, much like their CyberShot or Walkman branded phones. While those brands define themselves, the XPERIA brand name is derived from the word experience. This new brand will showcase a range of premium phones converging Web communication and multimedia entertainment. The XPERIA range will be Sony Ericsson's trump card to stand out from the many phones proclaiming an entertaining and feature-rich Web package.

XPERIA is Better? How?

What does the XPERIA X1 in reality have to offer? For now only, the specifications of the XPERIA X1 are in place. And this brings us to the first shock wave -- its OS. For the first time in the history of Sony Ericsson handsets, we'll see a handset that sports the Windows Mobile OS. It so surprised me at first that I thought it was a really bad idea to have Windows Mobile as OS.However, on seeing the official video, I had to reconsider what I'd thought before. I also recollected my experiences with the HTC Touch and Dual Touch which added the icing on the cake. Now, Windows Interface isn't going to change drastically for just a phone; however, I hope by the time Windows Mobile closes on to version 7, we'll have a complete facelift like a Vista from XP with far better optimization. The XPERIA X1 will be the first handset to come with a Windows Mobile version 6.1; however, this is yet to be officially confirmed on the Windows Mobile site. The XPERIA X1 has a powerful Qualcomm MSM7200 528MHz processor with a 128MB of RAM and 256 MB of internal storage. User storage space of 400 MB has also been provided. Surprisingly, it also sports a microSD flash card slot as compared to proprietary M2 flash memory support.
