The Easy Rider Of Mobile Phones

Remember having a mobile phone so bulky it had to be kept in the car? Back when mobile phones were called car phones they were big grey monstrosities which only business people could afford, and were far too heavy and cumbersome to carry around. Thankfully, due to modern technology, they were phased out.But now the car phone is back, albeit smaller, neater and lighter. The Motorola M990, also called the Smart Rider, has been specifically designed for use on the road.Expected in June, the handset looks more like a satellite navigation system than a phone, and there's a good reason. The M990 has a relatively large display - 320x240 pixels or 2.8" - to allow easy viewing of the integrated GPS software. It is definitely more suited to a vehicle than a pocket, and will be ideal for delivery drivers, taxi drivers or anyone else who spends a lot of time on the road.

As well as GPS, the Smart Rider also encompasses voice recognition software, Bluetooth, MP3 player, email and internet. It can be wired into your vehicle's electrical system, to save the battery, and can be connected to a microphone, speakers and antennae. The handset can then be unplugged and removed when you leave the vehicle unattended. The M990 can hold up to 4 user profiles, useful if the vehicle is driven by more than one person. It can also react to traffic reports and suggest diversions if accidents or roadworks occur. Finally, it can be connected to a fleet management system for easy vehicle tracking.

I actually remember Car Phones as I had my first in the beginning of the 80s. It was the old NMT system and due to the battery, it was almost impossible to carry along.

Now I stick to Nokia, but then again, I'm a Norwegian :-)

Btw: Thanks for the add in BlogCatalog!

Really useful information. I wish I new about your site before I made my last cellphone purchase. Also there is another site on blog catalog that posted an entry encouraging the recycling of cellphones. http://focusorganic.com
There is also a group called cellphonesforsoldiers that sends donated cellphones to soldiers to facilitate contact with their families. Great post. Take care. =)
