Asda sells mobile for £5

Asda is selling 50,000 bargain pay-and-go mobile handsets for a fiver - less than the price of their plastic dummy toy phones for toddlers.

From today, the store will offer the Nokia and Sagem products, with the price including a SIM card. Trading director Peter Pritchard said: "Shoppers are increasingly turning to pay as you go as a way of controlling their spending on mobiles.

Four types of phone are on offer - the Nokia 1112 and Sagem My212x, Sagem My220x, and Sagem My150x.Tariffs are on Virgin, T-Mobile and Orange.Asda, which reckons the phones will be snapped up in 24 hours, claims there are no hidden extras.Carphone Warehouse sells a Sony Ericsson J110i for a bargain £4.45. But customers are tied to buying at least £10 worth of credit.

Rival Tesco's lowest pay as you go deals include an LG Jaguar KG130 Pink for £9.97 and a Motorola F3 for £11.22.

Mr Pritchard said: "Buying technology can be confusing when shoppers are bombarded with half price contracts and free gifts.

"Many cheap pay as you go offers from other mobile phone retailers tie customers into paying for up to £50 worth of credit."
